Today we made two prototype art trails, very quickly testing what it was like to design and produce art work and to follow a route. We started by identifying themes that had emerged last week and decided to use sport and symbols as one group's theme, with the other choosing animals and nature.
Then, in our groups, we decided on an end point for our trails, which would both start at the classroom. One group was to use the playground, while the other used the inside of the school building. We all draw maps of the proposed route, thinking about what we would pass and see on the way. We also walked the route to find inspiration and to check out where we could put our art work that we would make.
We then got making! We used different materials to quickly make art work that responded to our themes and somehow connected to something special about ourselves or the location of our art trails. Everyone made something, either working in pairs or individually. We used paper, wooden sticks, paint, scraps of fabric and pencils and other scrap materials.
Once our art works were complete, we went out along our trails to fix the pieces along it for the other group to find. We tried to think about where they might need directions and whether we could match what people had made to specific locations.
With the trails ready we returned to the classroom to swap instructions and then go out once more to follow the other group's trail. It was exciting to find all the art work and to try to interpret what had been made!
We finished the session by talking about the walk that we would do next week and how it would be the start of a much bigger art trail, for which we would need to find locations for art work that we would make over a longer period of time after half term.
