2.3 Developing Instillation Proposals

Today we developed our ideas for an amazing art trail, and worked on our design and communication skills in doing so. As a class we began by recalling all the key themes and ideas that had been generated so far then discussed how it would be important to work these up, thinking about how they are made and how they would function as art work in the public realm.

We all got into pairs and each pair first discussed and made notes about different ideas that they could develop. Each pair came up with at least five specific ideas of art work they could make to be part of an art trail. Then choosing the best idea, one person in each pair started to develop a large drawing of it, initially in pencil, then adding colour with water colour paints and detail using fine line black pens. Meanwhile the other person in each pair made a presentation board describing some of the key features and qualities of the art piece. They made a small drawing in the centre and annotated with text answering a series of questions.

Everyone worked hard to produce this set of work that more fearfully described an idea and how it could be achieved. We spent time at the end of the session discussing all the ideas and looking for ways to draw links between some of them. We talked about the need to find some unifying features so that after our walk next week we would be able to develop a single art trail project that everyone could contribute to. Some of the main themes that emerged included: the olympic rings, words, phrases and poems, looking at things in new ways, and collecting or finding special things along a route.

We finished by discussing the trip next week to the QEOP. We decided we hold bring cameras to record the journey and so as to remember particular places we might want to install art work.
