3.1 Mapping an Amazing Art Trail

Our first session at Old Ford Primary was really great. We got to know our superb year 4 class who were all really keen to be involved and many of whom had had good experience making art installations before.

We started by discussing the QEOP, talking about who had been, how they had got there and what it was like. For those who hard;t been it was a good opportunity to hear about it and we discussed what we might like to do when we go in a few weeks time. We also discussed what we thought an art trail might be and people gave examples of events they had been a part of in the past. Finally we talked a little bit about this project and what we would be doing over the next ten weeks.

We then got busy looking at maps to begin to find routes between the school's neighbourhood and the QEOP. Everyone started by tracing all the places they could find and recognise on the map, both near by and around the Park. We looked at different routes between the two before then removing the base map to reveal just our own maps, showing the possible beginnings of our art trail.

In the second half of the activity we used pencils, colouring pencils and collage to start imagining what an amazing new art trail might be like. Everyone added lots of new things to their maps and annotated them to describe what they where thinking.

At the end of the session we discussed together as a class the sorts of idea that had come about during the work. We wrote a list of these and discussed how we would return tho these themes next week when ewe will be getting active and making mini prototype art trails around the school for each other to follow.
